Startling and informative opening Did you know that more than 2 million people in the U.S. alone suffer from self mutilation, or that more than 400 websites promote self harm? Many people say that self harm makes you “emo” or strange but it really doesn’t. A lot of the time you would never be able to tell someone who self harms from someone who doesn’t if you didn’t see the cuts or burns. So don’t judge people who do self harm or self injure because it doesn’t mean that they are weird or even that different. It just means that they are trying to find a different way to express themselves. If you have a friend or know someone that self harms you should to help them to realize that self mutilation is not a good way to do so because suicide due to self harm is usually accidental and you don’t want someone you care about to be one of the unlucky people who lose their lives due to self injury.
Quick summary of main question that I mean to answer or reason I think this topic is important This is a very important topic because many Americans suffer from self harm and don’t know how to tell anyone or how to get help.
Two or three most interesting things I learned from research Im my research, I learned that you can be addicted to self harm so it often is carried out for many years. Also, I learned that in most cases, suicide due to self harm is accidental.
Confirmation or rejection of one or two commonly held beliefs about this topic Many people believe that only woman self harm but that is a common misconception due to flawed research. Actually many men do as well they are just less likely to seek help
Something to connect the topic to the reader's life so that he/she will care Most people who self harm start at the age 13-14 so every person in this room probably knows at least one person who self harms, even if you are unaware of it.
A closing surprise...intriguing fact, quotation, or discovery from my own research In my research I have discovered that many people do self harm, so those people who do should not feel alone. It doesn’t make you “emo” or weird it just means that you are expressing yourself differently and the people who care about you just want what’s best for you. So if you haven’t already, you should tell someone and they’ll help and support you to get the help you need.
